make it a faux doc kinda like District 9. Have the narrator interviewing people at the end of the war, with flashbacks to their stories. Obviously they would have to cut a few of the stories, but it could have worked.

Keep in mind, The book has sold less than 2 million copies (in various forms). This movie is obviously produced for the mass population of "TL;DR" variety.
Pop-corn flick with a popular book name.
ETA: I bet over 50 million people will pay to see this movie in the theaters... and Blue-ray sales will be huge. Unfortunaetly, Hollywood cares very little about keeping to a story and more about $$$.
