thats a v6 i'm assuming? i'd even thought about the 4 cyl depending on my commute. but all the tacomas i've driven were the v6

A v6 with a standard transmission will give you the best fuel mileage with a 4x4. The 4bangers don't handle towing or oversized tires or extra weight in general very well.

ETA: And to put the power into perspective, most V8s of the early 90's were putting out around 200hp I believe. They had more torque, but those v6s like to rev
