Mathieu, 20, was dismissed from LSU in August after failing multiple drug tests. He returned to school as a student, but was arrested Oct. 25 on charges of marijuana possession.

According to those close to him, Mathieu escaped to South Florida to decide his future. He is staying in Broward County with the family of Arizona Cardinals cornerback Patrick Peterson, his former LSU teammate, and training locally as he decides if he will declare for the NFL Draft.

“He wanted to get away from the madness in Baton Rouge,” said Pat Lawler, a Boca Raton lawyer and agent for Galaxy Sports. “His mindset is to deal with his problems and get his life in order. He and his family are looking at getting Tyrann back together.”

Lawler, who has not signed Mathieu as a client, said Mathieu wanted to speak to young players while in the area. Lawler called Atlantic assistant coach Eddie Giersbrook, a former classmate at LSU.

Mathieu, one of the most well-known players in college football, spoke to Atlantic players for about 10 minutes.

“I think it was cool. I had never seen him in person,” Atlantic senior Brisly Estime said. “He told us to just work hard and stay in school. He said he made a lot of mistakes, but he stayed positive.”
