English Pale Ale and Scotch Ale categories are not mediocre styles IMO. I agree w/ the pilsner, lager categories being mediocre styles and it would seem near impossible to judge differences among the top beers in the style.

GABF and other comps are not a reflection of whether a beer is good or not. It is a reflection of if it meets some arbitrary style guidelines. Some of the best breweries in the US have never won anything. I personally usually prefer beers that aren't true to some style and are awesomely unique and delicious in their own way.
