I think the people hating on this season are just way overstating the case. Is the show at its creative peak? No. But it's still a solid show taking a well-deserved victory lap.
Barney has changed, but I think its entirely consistent with his character and has been clearly mapped out throughout the show's run. He's always wanted love and security, underneath his bravado. He's a big kid who is finally growing up. He and Robin are perfect for one another because both are so terrified of relying on other people, but also are fundamentally lonely people.
Anyway, I thought this was everything I wanted in a HIMYM episode. It was funny, advanced the overall plot, and had some great sight gags (Splitsville, how quickly Lily and Marshall have sex) as well as great throwaway lines ("I bet he's a great ballhandler.")

I thought other episodes this season were funnier. But I agree people are hating just to hate at this point.
We get it, the show has declined.

Don't get me wrong, I thought last night's episode was pretty funny, but I feel like it was one if the first funny ones this season. I just haven't found this season as funny.
And while yes, the reasons you listed make sense for Barney and Robin to be together, there are still plenty more reasons for them not to be together, as we are often told by wildtigercat, the biggest being the kids issue.
I don't know, it still feels all forced to me and the only reason I'm still watching is because I feel like I have too. But if forcing these things to happen means wrapping up the show then I guess I'm all for it
ETA: I think one of the reasons I liked last nights more was that Marshall and Lily actually were part of the plot. I feel like they've pretty much been non-characters this season
