I believe that is Ned watching his dad and bro die. I am not sure I understand why he was allowed to live in that scene. Im not sure how letting Lyana Stark die and not see her brother is protecting the heir at the TOJ.

In the execution, Brandon was forced to watch his father being burned alive in his armor, suspended from above by the same rope around his neck via pulley. The closer he moved to his father, the closer Lord Rickard was lowered to the flames. It took all Brandon's strength to hold his father as high as he could...


Could you imagine?

and remember...Jaime and Barriston were among those present who stood and watched.
