I attribute it more to the fact that southern players have

a)better weather to train in year round
b)spring football in some states
c)led the wave of the 7 on 7 and skills camps

They've simply trained more over a longer period of time in many instances. Other areas are upping the training so I do think the gap may close. Also, basketball is huge in the north. Many elite athletes choose basketball over football.
