Stanford was 1 win away from being in the BCS CG the last 2 years Yeah, they lost that game to Oregon pretty bad both times, but they were very close. That maybe as close as they get any time soon. Clemson had 3 loses lat year, so they weren't really close.
IMO to be a national power, a team would have to be in the hunt consistently, but as Stanford showed, if you get an elite QB, even second tier teams can compete for the top 5 and maybe a NC
