On pistols, I love my Rugers, solid weapons all around. Start out with a simple .22 cal revolver till you get comfortable with a side-arm. Get a pistol that is comfortable to you. Obviously a 1911 .45 ACP is not for everyone. Go with what is right for you. I wouldn't go any lower than .380 caliber for self-defense.

The Remington model 870 guage shot-gun is the AK-47 of the shotguns. They take a licking and keeps on ticking, plus the price is right. Mossberg 500 is another solid shotgun.

Rifles: I love my Ruger 10/22 carbine .22, solid rifle. Larger caliber rifles, the 30-30 Winchester is hard to beat as an all-around rifle. Marlin still produces good rifle.

BTW, if you want to get into 'AR' or tactical rifles, remember A-B-C. Armalite, Bushmaster, Colt. Its hard to go wrong with any of these rifles.
