Traditionally, the best self defense shotgun has been the 12 gauge, usually a pump, and usually w/ 00 buckshot. I agree w/ those who've mentioned a youth model, especially in certain circumstances..

I have 2 youth model Mossberg shot guns. Both have been fine guns. One was bought as a home defense gun for my daughter. My daughter did not like shooting larger shotguns, like a full size Remington 1100 or full size Mossberg pump 12 gauge, but she liked the Bantam.

The weapon documented to have the best chance of putting a quick end to an encounter is the 12 gauge shotgun; the 20 also does well and would be a good consideration for recoil sensitive or smaller folks. You can buy a reliable pump shotgun w/o breaking the piggy bank. The newest Mossberg I bought cost $240, brand new. You can get a very serviceable and reliable home defense shotgun without having the newest, 20 round shotgun comlete w/ tactiacl stock, laser range finder, red dot sight, collapsible stock, flashlight, etc. The main thing is that the gun be RELIABLE and one you can HANDLE.

Most reputable self defense folk do not recommend birdshot. Yes, it doesn't penetrate the walls of a building, but it also doesn't penetrate very well in human tissue.

00 is overpenetrating inside a house on a human. It doesn't do as much damage a #4 Buckshot will and it's also a lot more likely to penetrate walls and kill someone else in the house.

That's why cops go with it.

Not that 00 won't do it. It will do the frick out of it, but it's not 'tuned' to a human at ten feet.
