Noob intro & Outboard Question

Ever since I stumpled upon the OD board I been meaning to introduce myself, just haven't gotten around to it till now. Names Josh, I'm 24, and still trying to finish school; kinda hard when having to work full-time! I grew up in St. Charles Parish and currently reside in Norco. Love the outdoors. I do a lot of fishing and I'm trying to get more into hunting. I wasn't lucky enough to have folks that were big into hunting and fishing, so most of what I do know I had to learn on my own.
Well the reason for my post is to get ya'lls opinion on the size motor I plan on purchasing for my boat. Its a 17ft fiberglass semi-V skiff (see below). It had a late 70's 25hp Evinrude, which never ran, so I don't know how well the 25hp pushed it. I can get a '93 15hp Yamaha to put on it but not sure if this motor would be too small. I'll be doing mostly freshwater and marsh fishing, and don't plan on taking it out too far. Also, its a home-made boat so I don't have any specs on the recommended hp. I'm thinking it should work for what I plan on doing with it. Whats ya'lls opinions? Anything I need to be aware of in having an under powered boat? I would get a 25 or 35hp but it wouldn't be beneficial for me to drain my savings while I'm in school. I can get this 15 Yamaha right now for $600 and after doing some research, I feel I won't be able to find a much better deal. Thoughts?

Those small trailer tires would worry me 
I'm not sure why they just look too little.
It's hard to tell if you could put anything bigger on there or not. Without knowing how the 25 pushed it there's no way really to know how the 15 will do, but I will say being a 17' fiberglass boat it will be slow. The poster DeezNuts no. 9 has an 18' aluminum go devil boat with a 9.9 and it doesn't go anywhere fast, but it does the job. I think we were going about 15ish with 2 people, gas and loaded down with crabbing gear/ice chest.
I know you're not trying to up the HP, but being homemade I'd be worried about putting a bigger motor on there because of the added weight, not sure if the transom is made to handle it. Something else to think about as well if you were putting a 4 stroke.
If you can't afford any more the 15' will get you around but you'd be better off with at least a 25 IMO

On that lake skiff, I would probably go with something bigger than a 30. Look for used motors, some that people have laying around in their garages, and some that dont run right and people are getting rid of

Hahaha You noticed those tires huh? Yeah, they are a tad bit small. I went to Wal-Mart to replace the flat ones that were on there and these were the only size they had there with 4 lugs. Didn't realize they were smaller until I got back with them. They were able to carry the boat to my house and thats what I needed them for. I will be putting new tires on the old rims after I get it going. But we're talking about the motor now, we'll cross that bridge when we get there.

You didn't think it was weird when the checkout lady put them in a bag?
ETA: I am sorry man, I cant stop laughing at those tires. You gotta shop them out or I am gonna bust a blood vessel in my eyes

Definately looking for a motor that runs right, so thats out the question.
I'm not much of a mechanic so I'm in need of something that doesn't require too much TLC. Photobucket all of a sudden is screwing up, so I'll get some extra pictures when I can. But the boat seems to be built pretty sturdy. Fiberglass is pretty thick but it is not as heavy as it may look. I had the boat for a few years now but its been sitting up ever since. Haven't had the time or money to put into it until now.

My buddy has a 15' Carolina Skiff and had a 15 4 stroke. It wouldn't push it past 10 or 11 mph. It's rated for a 25 so that's what he has now. I would say a 25 2 stroke would be your best bet. Can find a couple on Craigslist for some pretty good deals. You have to dig though.

the lines running the length of the hull in the pic...those are chines. like the wiki link mentions, they keep a hull from rolling, but they also keep a boat from "walking," slipping or aeroplaning while on plane.
chines are to boats what tread is to tires...
if you don't have chines, too much motor will have the arse end of that hull sliding sideways in an attempt to "catch up" with the bow...and that's a damn spooky feeling

Yea, I worked with a dude with a 17' aluminum flat and a 50hp motor...bottom of the boat is one flat piece of aluminum, slick as frick. It would just slide sideways when you turn at full throttle. He ended up having little tabs welded on to the edges in the back on each side and it helped

Pardon my ignorance. But yeah, it does have grooves/chines running down the length of the boat. The hull is a little old; but everyone, who knows a little something about boats, likes it and seems to think its still in good shape.
Just need a motor... and tires then I'm good to go.
