Anyone ever restore an old Jeep here?

What did you spend?
Heh, now I know that's a question that begs 1,000 more questions, but looking at buying a 60's era Jeep for about $1,000 - $1,500. It is all original with a good frame. Metal doors and hard top are in surprisingly good condition. Would need a new body tub.
This would be a first restoration project. Anyone here on MT deal with Jeeps or restorations?

If you are not familer with this company take a look at their site, it is required reading for Jeep owners and restorers. You may be able to just cut out and replace the bad sections of the body tub, Quadratec has preformed replacement panels for doing that.

If you can get a good one for that cheap, do it. I've seen basket cases asking $3000+. Putting on a new body tub isn't easy to do, but if you have friends time you can do it.
My first Jeep was a '55 CJ-5 that my dad and I saw rotting in a backyard. It had a roof made of cardboard & tar and the guy took our offer of $300. I spent my 8th grade summer cleaning it up with my friend. We rebuilt the carburetor, fixed a problem with the water pump and did a few other easy things ourselves. Of course, once it got running my old man turned around and sold it for $3,000. Lesson learned.
As far as money: the sky is the limit. With mine we just cleaned it up and got it running - it was completely original except for the addition of a roll bar. We spent far less than $1000 on the whole thing (in the late '90s).
Quatratec has been using this CJ-7 as a promo Jeep since I was fixing up my old one, and I've always loved it:
