re: Why did it take TAF so long to get the architecture right?

They did a fantastic job with Neyland. I would love to see LSU do something of a similar nature to the west upper deck. My point was that the type of work needed at Tiger Stadium would not be exactly the same as what was done in Knoxville.

oh no doubt, i agree. i just think it would be a very doable project without having to tear the whole thing down and start over like one guy suggested earlier . it's not so bad that it can't be fixed, and to be honest once the new expansion is finished, i'm sure that will be something the people upstairs will discuss because it will just be out of place. fwiw, i hope they fix the concourses (the bathrooms) before they start doing stuff like that. it really is ridiculous. we have tickets in the north endzone, and it's embarrassing at how repulsive that area is.

tennessee also redid the entire exterior of the pressbox.
I liked it better before they turned it into a movie theatre...

It's hideous....and I hope they tear the whole west upper deck down and start over. It's the stadium version of Middleton library to me.
Keep in mind that they didn't build the new west upper deck from scratch. They tore off the top of the old west upper deck and rebuilt it with new club seating/lounges, press box and upper seating. Virtually everything from the bottom of the club lounges to the top was new construction, along with the 4 major supports. The ramps in the center and stairs were from the old uppper deck.
What LSU did on the West Upper deck project was really remarkable, engineering wise. They attempted and accomplished rebuilding without losing seating capacity for an entire season, which was the alternative. If they would have had time, I am sure the architecture could have been more in line with the existing lower bowl. Just look at the renderings for the new south upper decks to see what can be done from scratch.

IMO it looks very bland. I don't think it looks terrible now that the chain link fence has been replaced but it is definitely not the same style as the old bowl or the new SEZ expansion (which looks great btw)
From an aesthetic perspective it seems obvious that was the intention. I think it could look better but I don't think it's horrible and I'm certainly not gonna get worked up about it. I think that it will look kinda cool from the Nicholson/S. Stadium intersection once the champ's walk is completed.
Architecturally, I don't have a problem with a modern entrance to a overall classic design.

Crappy modernist and contemporary design has become the norm in an industry influenced by egotistical jerk offs. Sticking out is more important than design quality. I've heard some of them call the west upper an "architectural marvel".
usually i would question your definition of "design quality" and hatred of contemporary architecture, but in this case i couldnt agree more. Trey Trahan has done some amazing work in the area, but didnt get the west upper remodel right... at all.

Hey it's me. After our talk yesterday I decided to look up your post history and about 4-5 post from the top there's a reply to one of my post. I wonder how many times we've probably cussed each other out on TD.com. Anyway I just wanted to say hello and that its good to know that I have a friend on here.
BTW, what time did you make it into work this morning?

Am I the only one who thinks the new South endzone looks bad - on the outside?
The inside looks incredible.

Still don't know what they saw in Trahan. It was a disaster.

What did you expect them to do? Plaster a bunch of damn arches all over the thing? The west upper is sleek, and it's a perfect marriage of design and functionality. The proportions and geometry are spot on. Perhaps they could have done something different as far as materials, but the overall design is fine.
Trahan also designed the softball stadium, which is stunning. Wish they would have done the SEZ expansion

Pretty much how I feel. I don't mind the design at all. I just wish they would have used different materials like you said. Maybe some kind of marble or other stone instead of that lego looking shite. And I understand the need for louvers since the west upper faces the sun, but they could have used something that didn't look like rusted prison bars. And they also should have covered up all that fire proofing underneath...oh and of course the pvc shite pipe

Thanks to you assholes, that's all I see when I look at the west side now.

I think this is being blown out of proportion. Once the thing is built, it's going to look great. One thing the SEZ will have - the Roman arches.
Who knows? Maybe the TAF will try to improve the WestUpper's looks and blend it in with the SEZ Upper somehow. At least they should fix the minor aesthetics and cosmetic things like the 'rusty jail' louvers and the pipe thing.
But somehow I think it's all going to come together: the NEZ paint, new windows, and plaza/grounds/street improvements, the West side plaza and lot improvements, and the SEZ Upper.
It may just come out perfect....

Tray Trahan is a POS who has to do the worst archetectural work I've ever scene. Everything is form over function. You site the softball stadium as great work where it faces East yet has a grand stand that acts more like a giant sail than an overhang. It doesn't protect people from rain or sun so why does it exist?
Many of his designs are absolutely fraught with design flaws that don't work. Sinks that don't drain, doors that slide off of their hinges, roof concepts that leak, concrete that corrodes in moist environments, breezeways that cause water to flow under them and rain on the people walking underneath. It is purely form over function with a complete lack of practicality in design that is nearly impossible in execution.
The reason he wasn't picked for the SEZ expansion is because of how many disasters occurred during the west side expansion. Do you know why there are bars over the glass? It's because the glue he ordered be used to secure the windows without using any other mechanical bonding method loses it's strength when heated. So the windows started falling off and plummeting 200 ft down and landing where people walk into the stadium. After they "fixed" the problem, they left the bars up just in case. Also, the project ended up waay over budget and over time.
