even if LSU had played and beaten Texas in the Cotton Bowl, LSU would not have won the AP National Title. Southern Cal or Penn State would have.

Agree here. But t would have been a fun game to watch. I think LSU only gave up like 450 yds rushing the whole year. Thats amazing. Texas would have had trouble, IMO.

Look, it would have been a superb game. And not that LSU wouldn't have been deserving. I'm merely saying with the loss to Ole Miss, the NC was gone.

No sir, Longhorns beat Irish 21-17 1970 Cotton Bowl to win MNC. Irish ended 8-2-1 for year.
Screw them both!

Just a suggestion...Get Pete Finney or Dan Hardestys books. They will help with a lot of these questions.

If this were Bama with a season like that, they would have another claimed National Championship...

And after the 1970 season, 1971 Cotton Bowl. Notre Dame beat #1 Texas, 24-11 to put Nebraska #1 in the AP after Stanford upset Ohio State and Nebraska beat LSU. UPI had already awarded Texas their title.

This is correct. Also after the 1977 season Nd beat #1 Texas again in the 1978 Cotton Bowl.Which gave Bama the NC if I am not mistaken. A split with USC I think.

Since 1969 was the first year I got into football and my Dad took me to the Auburn game on Oct. 25, (I still have the program - Andy Hamilton on the cover) - I still to this day remember every game:

LSU 35 Texas A&M 6
LSU 42 Rice 0
LSU 63 Baylor 8
LSU 20 Miami 0
LSU 37 Kentucky 10
LSU 21 Auburn 20 Oct 25
LSU 23 Ole Miss 26 Nov. 1
LSU 20 Alabama 15
LSU 61 Miss.State 6
LSU 27 Tulane 0

That LSU team could have beaten Penn State and John Cappeletti in the Orange or Texas and James Street in the Cotton for the NC. Notre Dame did not deserve to go over LSU - they were ranked lower than LSU and had a worse record. Still pisses me off.

No,it gave Notre Dame the title even though they went into the game ranked #5 and Alabama was ranked #3. Still irritates the Tide.

Coincidentally Notre Dame did win the Cotton the next year and Alabama and Southern Cal split, but the Cotton had no bearing on the Tide and Trojans.

Ok. This is the year I was talking about. Bama beat ARK in the Sugar 24-7.

thats right. I remember the cover of SI after the game and it had terry Eurich on the cover. He played for Saginaw Aurther Hill in Michigan and as a senior in 1976 they went unbeaten and unscored upon in class A[which is like 5-a in LA]. We were the closest to them by losing 40-0. An unreal achievement.

Nope. They beat Joe Pa and Penn State 14-7 with the famous goal line stand. They beat Holtz and the Hogs 24-9 the next year.

Blame the Cotton Bowl that took a lower ranking team, with a worse record, over LSU.

Darrell Royal actively campaigned the Cotton Bowl committee - "Give me ANYBODY but LSU and I'll win the MNC." They used Notre Dame's first foray into Bowls as an excuse.

Looks like I am a year behind. Ok I won't be wrong here. UGA beat ND in the 1981 Sugar Bowl.

Royal called Paterno personally and tried to get him/Penn State to come to the Cotton that year. That would have been 1 vs 2.
