If she comes from a good sire an dam that are duck dogs it won't be very hard to get her trained or even train her yourself. Even if she didn't come from top notch dogs, a good trainer could get it done. All labs have the instinct to retrieve, some are easier than others to refine.

I'm in the process of training my first. 6 month old chocolate lab female, 55 lbs already and doing full retrieves with dummy's already, water or land. Working on integrating the gun shot into the routine now.

Heres the deal. If she will go get a newspaper when you throw it, and you have a shitload of ducks, you can make her a hunting dog unless she is just full retard.

If you have a shitload of ducks, i will be your dogs personal trainer for free

I agree, bloodline is key. Most labs instinctively retrieve. We just need to teach them obedience.

I never took on a dog that old and being a bitch, to me it would be very hard to break bad habits. Over the years, I found bitches stop learning after 2.5 years old.

A dog that old might have some really bad habits. That all depends on the owner if they had worked the dog when it was younger.

When I start a dog's trainning, I start as soon as 8 weeks old. By 6 months, it should be under the gun trainning. By 8 months, the dog should be hunting. Weak yes, but willing to hunt it's arse off for you. It is a lot of work EVERY DAY which makes a good dog.

Stay away from backyard breaders.

You know, I used to believe this. I had a deposit check written and about to mail it when my parents got a free black lab from a neighbor for me. I was pissed bc it didn't have papers, wasn't from a good bloodline, etc....I was about to pay close to $900 for a British champion line in TX.

Needless to say, this no named bloodline dog I ended up with has been outstanding and has made other trainers and their dogs look like fools. Making me look like a G. Haha.

I still think that a good bloodline is key, just not 100% of the time. You can get lucky like me and be blessed with good dog without paying for it.

Sorry for the hijack, if you work with your dog a little at a time constantly and understand how they learn and their thinking process, you can have your lab ready for opening day. (if the obedience and other basics are decent already)

And of course....read "water dog" (just skip the planned time line he proposes)
