I'm still unsure how severe the penalties should be - the situation is unique for how horrifying and unusual it seems to be. More than anything else seeing the students and others holding a vigil for Paterno's statue this week convinced me of how bad of a culture problem there is at PSU right now. I would not expect everyone to abandon Paterno's legacy immediately but there is a time and place for everything and rushing to preserve his legacy over the concerns of the victims of rape and abuse seems just way over the top to me.

If they were an ethical and consistent institution the NCAA could do something healthy along the lines of insist on more thorough separation of power away from the head football coach (and make clear this is the rationale for their punishment). This would be a good thing for college sports on the balance - the problem is I'm obviously not convinced the NCAA has been or will be an ethical and consistent institution.
