Do not tell me you missed the LBT OB purchase thread...did you?

Found this thread and I'm here to contribute. I hope it's OK to link other forums, because this is pretty good.
One topic that rarely comes up; "wealth." Obviously after TSHTF, your M3, in ground pool and nice watch will be worthless, but other items will take their place. Are you a target of you appear to be a person who has his/her shite together? In this universe, a well-prepared survivor walking around with a fat molle pack, munching on an energy bar is the equivalent of an fat white man in an Armani suit and Rolex.
With all the other things to worry about, does this make the cut?

Anyone got ideas on 2 way radios for a bug out bag?
Posted on 4/17/13 at 10:17 pm to LSURoss
Yeah. Don't do it. You're gonna add weight and a need for batteries for something that makes noise every time you use it.
ETA:
If you want more bad ideas, just do a Youtube search. Lotsa dumb people buying, packing and carrying dumb stuff.

Actually, my pool is a helluva fresh water reservoir. Not to mention all the salt I keep stocked up on for it. It's not ideal salt but it'll work.

Good point. The cast magnesium components of a high-end sports car can be burned in spectacular fashion. Certainly that has value. For something.

I mainly want them for my wife and I's vehicles for short term communication to be able to meet up if anything were to happen while we are both at work.

A big thing is to be able to recognize the true survival value in everyday items. I have all the survival shite as well.

You know they only have a range of 1/4 mile, right?
Posted on 4/17/13 at 10:38 pm to Springfield XD
Motorola or someone doesn't have something with a little more range?
Posted on 4/17/13 at 10:42 pm to LSURoss
Best thing is to have a rendezvous point. Walkie talkies simply don't have the range.

10-4. We have discussed that but was just curious. I am in the road daily so her staying put and me going to her still reigns true.

Anything over a certain wattage would require a permit(from FCC I think). We have some at work that uses a repeater tower and they will only reach 5 miles or so. And they weren't cheap. Course this all depends on terrain and other things causing interferance. If you are in Montana with little other radio traffic from hill to hill you would get more distance. In a city environment you would be limited.

Yep..the signals are traveling horizontally so they will be affected by depressions/elevations and physical obstacles.

Flat land with no physical obstructions? Then yes, that would be possible. Hills, valleys, mountains, trees, etc.? No.

In space it would probably double that
I would say complete BS. But for $100 you could find out. I had some that claimed 8 miles. One or two was about as good as it got. And that was in Kansas on the interstate(before cell phone coverage every where)

Normal terrain with very expensive equipment, you might get 3 miles. Even the curvature of the earth limits it. The signal is sent "line of sight". That's why repeaters are needed for further distances.
