It's possible. I've seen some before. Chicken's avi is actually a gif. I think that it might be frowned upon by the admins though because it slows load times I think.

I doubt that one would be okay. There are some gifs as avys but they are usually a gif of just two images flipping back and forth. Has to be under a certain size.
