Its almost impossible to intertwine the movies and the regular season. I believe that Broly's Legendary Super Saiyan form is unique to him, which is why Goku cant reach that form.
If we are to try to make sense of the movies, than Bardock is the SSJ that Frieza and his family are so afraid of, Broly is the LSSJ and Goku is just a SSJ.
If we ignore the movies, than it can be said that Goku is actually the LSSJ that Vegeta was talking about, because he was the first SSJ to appear in over 1,000 years.

I just remember after the Android 17 fight Vegeta talking about "ascending to a higher level than super saiyan" but not level 2 (or whatever it was that Gohan got against Cell). Led to him and Trunks doing the training in the time chamber thing at Kami's Lookout.

There are actually 4 different stages of the SSJ1 form. There is the Ascended SSJ1 form which is what Vegeta uses right after the hyperbolic time chamber. Then there is the Ultra SSJ1 form which is what Trunks uses against Cell. Then there is the Full Power SSJ1 form which is what Goku and Gohan achieve and essentially make the other 2 forms useless. None of them are transformations, but rather just an increase of their power and muscles. The Full Power form is just a mastering of the SSJ1, so they get the full power of SSJ1 without the inhibiting of the muscle increase.

That basically is why the Ascended and Ultra form suck. The Full Power form has the strength and power of those two forms while keeping their speed up. Also, that is why you don't see any character transform into that form after the Cell Saga, because everyone can do the Full Power form in the Buu Saga.

When goku and gohan came out the hyperbolic time chamber as SSJs and they stayed in that form on the regular.....awesome

I got my parents to get me every episode of DB,DBZ,and DB GT for Christmas when I was younger. At the time, they had only dubbed in English up to when Gohan beats Cell; so from then on, I had original uncut Japanese with subs from then on including GT and the movies. The Japanese episode were much better than the English ones, mainly because it was way more graphic.

The music and writing is much, MUCH better in the Japanese version, but some of the voices annoy me (especially Goku sounding like a little girl).
