LSU vs. Nebraska 1971 Orange Bowl
The 69 - 70 defenses were asolutely awesome. One of those years either 69 or 70, other teams averaged 68 yards per game rushing against LSU. That is sick especially in the era of how much teams ran the ball.
Actually the '69 LSU defense set an NCAA record (which may still stand, not sure) by allowing 39.6 yards rushing per game for that whole season.
Archie phucked up our chance for a national title.
That and Mac not going for a tying FG against Ole Miss which would have put us at 9-0-1 and in the Cotton Bowl vs #1 Texas. Don't see how they could have taken a 2 loss and lower ranked Notre Dame team anyway.....The team then turned down a bid to the Astro-Bluebonnet...

The "hump" was the same one we face today..."Bama"! Although Miles has done much better against Saban than Coach Mac did against the Bear.
Although Mac beat them back to back 69-70, Arch was the hump in 69(23-26 L)!, we did beat them several times over there but were still not in Nat Title hunt.

Jerry Tagge's winning TD. Great program cover with writing from that era.
Yes, the A&M loss was a fluke and a lot of it went back to Butch Duhe's passing earlier in the week. But LSU's other two losses were to Final AP #2 Notre Dame 3-0 and #1 Nebraska 17-12. That 1970 team was as good as anybody, Ohio State and Texas notwithstanding.

Pretty sure this is the game where Dardar kept knocking their all american center on his big butt. Finally the announcers quit talking about how great he was. Loved Dardar in that game.
Ramsey Dardar played from '79-'82.

with just a little more offensive imagination, this 1971 Tiger team could have been the greatest LSU team of all time. Sound familiar?

Yeah, this was in Sports I. that week; I lamented over this photo many times! Isn't that Mike Anderson he is going over?
