My bow I used in HS broke(it was older then me). I'm now looking for new tools of destruction. Thoughts on Compound vs Crossbow, and what is a good one for the $500, college kid, price range?

Mathews, Hoyt, Elite, Strother, or G5 from eBay.

So getting a used higher quality > new lower quality?

It is for me as long as you stay withing the years after the initiation of long riser/short limbs. Others not or else Bear would no longer exist.

More specifics please...Is this for hunting or target shooting? If for whitetail only then you don't need any more bow wt than 60# (if that). You really should go shoot as many bows as you can..Bass Pro, Cabelas, Bowie, your local shop. Figure your draw length with the salesman's help. Remember too that the accessories (release, site, arrows, peep, stabilizers, etc etc) really add up. Check out archerytalk.com as well for advice and used bows for sale after you have shot a few. Personally, I love to hunt with my compound. I killed some fine deer with my old Bass Pro Shop Kronik package btw.

Don't listen to him, he's a Mathews snob.
Look at Bear bows, you can get last years model brand new rigged on eBay for $100 cheaper than they were pretty regularly. Good deals IMHO. Brother bought a Bear Charge, I like it. I'd get the next model up, can't remember the name but mylsuhat has one. Sweet bow for the money.

are you anywhere around lafayette?
Posted on 7/9/12 at 4:05 pm to LSUFan3434
If you consider BR around laffy..sure. If not then no.

What draw weight did you use? Mine's at 66. My brother's is at 70. I can't go any heavier on mine though because it's only like 30% let off and I can't hold the bitch back

The one I was using was from 89 so I only had it at 55. Not else was possible to hold back on that cheap thing. I can pull his 70, but I've never tried to hold it as if I was looking at a deer.

Yea, mine is from the late 80's as well. It's a quiet bow though and I'm poor so it'll do for now.

Only reason I'm getting a new one is the cams broke and I took it to 3 bow shops and no one could fix it.

Pieces of one of my canes kinda broke off. It made noise for a few shots then went away. Hasn't affected the shooting though. I put another 50-100 arrows through it since then, I hope it doesn't blow up in my face.
