Is joining a union the way to go?

Basically I started a new job about a month ago, and in 2 months or so I will have the option to join, or not join the union.
Now the union has their own pension system, insurance, and the whole 9 yards, but the company does as well. I have access to the company's 401(k) numbers (50% match for the first 6%), but don't have access to the union's yet.
If the numbers are similar, would it be better to join or not? I'm not too experienced with the whole union thing, looking for general info as well. TIA

your union pension comes from your dues, which you could invest yourself.
I would say it makes sense if the jobsite makes it easier on the union members. My experience is most people who don't join are ornery sorts.
ETA: And while the law says the union has to look out for all employees, even the non-union ones, don't expect them to do anything for you around disciplinary action by the company.

Unions can promise anything, but have no obligation to deliver on their promises. By not joining the union things could be worse, better or the same as if you joined. The only certainty is that you'll be paying union dues. As the other poster pointed out, typically unions don't work very hard for non-union employees. I value having a direct line of communication between myself and my employer. Having a union intermediary doesn't work for me. Nationally, union membership is at historically low levels. The recent economic decline has really ushered in a new wave of union proliferation.

What kind of job do you have?
Operator?
Welder?
Pipe fitter?
Teacher?
Wait...it doesnt matter...the time of unions being needed is way past.

Kind of a side track question. Has any professional athlete opted out of their specific union? Seems like many conservative athletes are fairly conservative politically but are strong union guys.

Unions protect the shitty workers who otherwise would lose their jobs and OT to less senior employees who work harder and do what they are told.

Unions suck? Enjoying this wekend? Thank the unions for your weekend! THank the unions for your health care! Not being able to work as a child....thank the union for that! You got to play little league instead of work! Family medicall leave when something happens...yup the unionheloc you that. So, you get to keep your non union job while taking care of your family. 40 hour weeks and overtime...unions did that for you. Just because you're not in one doesn't mean you haven't reaped the benefits of unions throughout history.

Just stating the facts!

Are you lazy and looking to throw up bureaucratic impediments to having to work?
Do you want your union dues going to support the Democratic Party?
If the answer to either is yes then you definitely should join.

The system of getting your health insurance through your employer has become an abomination.

Or, I played video games and watched tv all day. Or got into fights in the neighborhood and broke in to cars.
I don't think it's a good thing that all children are prohibited from working.
I'm not saying that unions are evil, but they're not as great as a lot of people think.

You can be conservative and pro union! Are you can be ignorant of the facts and ignore all the benefits that unions have fought and recieved won for you!

Lazy? Shows how dumb you are! You think the guys that build your skyscrapers are lazy? Your plumbers, welders, operators and most every other job that takes sweat, skill and hard labor take exception to "lazy"! Don't politicize everything! That's the problem with your republicans and democrats!

Well....you can't fix stupid!

my thoughts exactly. Please elaborate on why unions are a good thing. And I don't need a history lesson...I want to know about 2012. How is the union beneficial?

What happened to the middle class? Maybe, there is a direct correlation between the decline of unions over the past 35 years and the decline of the middle class’s share of national income. When most Americans belonged to a union, 1940's and 1950's, income inequality in the U.S. was at its lowest point in the history of the country. The collapse of the middle class is the number one economic problem of our (America, since you are so worried about Asia) country!
With that being said are there downsides and negatives to Unions? ABSOLUTELY! Isn't there two sides to everything.
What bothers me most is when it's politicized. Republicans blaming Unions is the same as black people blaming Republicans! I'm conservative and a Union employee. Do I agree with everything that the Republican party represents? NO! They are just as much of the problem as a Democrat.
