Would be great for all of our young guys on the roster especially in midfield

Can you imagine:
Coutinho-Sturridge-Suarez
Eriksen-Lucas-Gerrard
So where does Xabi fit in this lineup? Or will we not be able to afford Erikson and Alonso without money from European competition?

Honestly I would go:
Coutinho-Sturridge-Suarez
Eriksen-Xabi-Gerrard
I doubt the Xabi transfer would have any bearing on Eriksen. The only thing I could think is the owners/BR possibly holding off on buying a young AM for another season if we were to gete Xabi. That would do two things:
1. Possibly allow us to qualify for the CL and attract a bigger prospect (hard to find, but they are out there)
2. Allow us to save money for a young AM.
It is no secret we need a young AM. Rodgers knows this. If we get Xabi this summer I can see him instead focusing on the CB situation more since our midfield would receive a world class player.
So in summary, regardless whether or not we get Xabi, a young attacking mid is in the cards whether it be this summer or next.

Anyone else a little worried about Sturridge's fitness? Maybe its just a little patch (dont know his injury history prior to LFC) and I'm over thinking it...
Still, I hope we bring in another quality striker... Other than a great work rate, I havent seen much in Borini that says anything more than squad player...

It is troublesome. Doesn't help that England is trotting him out in a worthless match against San Marino.
Hopefully a full summer of training and he can be 100% next season. Honestly though, there are a lot of players that have the problems he has had. Pick up a knock, try to play through it and end up missing a few weeks. The only player I can think of who flat out is never injured is Suarez.

Yea, I agree with most of what you're saying there. I guess it's just hard for me to sit Lucas because of how well he plays defensively when he's fully healthy. I don't remember if it was last year or the year before when right before his season ending injury he looked like the best defensive mid in England. I think there was a run of games against City and Chelsea maybe where he absolutely took over the opponents third of the field and was just destroying people. Obviously Alonso has much better vision going forward and his passing is far superior to Lucas'...i guess it's just a trade off. But until we shore up our fullbacks, I'm a lot more comfortable with an on form Lucas playing in front of them.

I really think Lucas will be back to his best next season... It takes a while to get back to 100% from a knee injury like that. Of course, he will never have the passing vision of Alonso... But, IMO, Alonso is only effective in a holding role in the double pivot... He needs a Mascherano or Kheira playing by his side...
I know shoring up the defense is our top priority this summer, but Ive not hidden the fact that Eriksen os my #1/favorite target... If we dont pursue him I wonder if BR may see that as a future role for Coutinho, he's played it before and many say his natural position... Another older, stop gap, signing could be Honda... He's currently in the last year of his contract... I've admired his game since WC 2010 and think he'd be a great addition..

I can see Gerrard and Xabi doing excellently defensively. There are probably only 2 or 3 teams that would be able to pick apart that midfield.
Especially now that Gerrard is playing as a DLP.

I cant really see it, but would loved to be proven wrong... I got a lot of love for Xabi..
What do you imagine his price tag would be... last year of a contract, 30+ yrs old??
Do you have a little talk with Hendo and make him give up the #14 shirt??

What about:
Suarez-Sturridge
---Eriksen----
Xabi---Gerrard
----Lucas-----
Reminds me a bit of Spain with Lucas as Busquets, Xabi as Xabi, Gerrard as Xavi and Eriksen as Cesc/Iniesta.

Yeah I like that but doesn't that negate our width and speed a bit???

Yea, that's true.
We also have to keep in mind that both are on the wrong side of 30 years old. Even if we got Xabi, there's no guarantee he and Stevie would start every game together. I know Gerrard has been a revelation as a DLP this season, but it's unfair to expect him to play as much as he has this season for the next couple of years. Same with Xabi.

Then interchange them you don't HAVE to have both on the pitch at the same time.
Sit one, play one. Keep rotating and you always have a fresh world class player ready to go.

I actually like that idea. Suarez would obviously be roaming a lot and coming to midfield to help pick up the ball as well. I wouldn't worry about the width thing too much since we don't have that much as is coming from our wingers since Rodgers likes to play them inverted anyway. From his system, the width is more designed to come from the fullbacks pushing forward.
ETA: All of this is completely hypothetical anyway considering we have yet to sign either Xabi or Eriksen, but damn that would be fun. There'd be a lot to play with in the lineup and formations too.
