The new Walcott contract has gotten me thinking about why player pay isn't a bigger story in the soccer world. Everyone knows Drew Brees is now a 100 million dollar man because of his new contract. Everyone knew ARod signed with the Rangers for $250 million. But you really couldn't say what soccer players are making off the top of your head. Fernando Torres is known as the 50 million pound man, but that is based off of his transfer price. Also, on a related note, why is the pay referred to weekly wages?

Clubs don't normally announce set yearend salaries for their players. Players can make much more or less than their announced weekly wages. It depends on several performance based bonuses and incentives and match appearance fees.

Say Player A makes £50k a week announced. That may get bumped to £55k if he starts and £56k if he scores.

Most American sports contracts are announced as guaranteed salaries regardless of performance. There are obviously things like signing bonuses and other rewards, but they are outside of the normal wage a player garners.
