Completely unfounded here. First off, sometimes friends want to go see a movie that I don't have particular interest in seeing. I do like having a good time and hanging out with them though, so I'll go and be surprised.

A better example, the previews just don't make the film look all that great, or it looks like one where the preview contains all the best parts. I went into Superbad, Pineapple Express, The Hangover, Hot Tub Time Machine, and most recently Horrible Bosses expecting nothing special. I was pleasantly surprised to laugh my arse off in each.

I'm sure that's exactly what it is most of the time. How many people go to the theater by themselves just because they really want to see a particular film?
