Maybe not in the past, but after T Boone's renovations they have a lot to sell. I think the issue is not that he can't get talent, but when he did have success he couldn't move up to top 20 classes. He has a ceiling on recruiting it seems.
They might have nice facilities, but he Stillwater is awful, just awful. It's almost comparable to Starkville.

His 2013 class, which given his recent success and step up into the Big 12 should mean a top 25 class, is not even in the top 40. That is not going to cut it in the SEC West where A&M is going to run top 10 offensive talent down your throat and LSU/Bama is going to smother you with top 10 defensive talent.
Patterson has made TCU look better than what they really are. They're probably the 6th most popular team in the Dallas area after Texas, A&M, Tech, Baylor, SMU and Oklahoma. TCU is a absolute doormat and gets the last picks when it comes to recruiting.

I'm more than impressed with Manziel and had no idea that the Aggies were going to do as well as have this season.
But for some reason--and this could be based on my 43 years of Hog fandom-- I think we'll be more than fine in competing with the Ags now. We always have.

Beck isn't ready yet. I have known him since we worked at SMS. He is a great coach great man. But he isn't ready for SEC HC yet. Great HS HC though in AZ and Dallas.

I can't wait to revisit this thread after you guys make a disappointing hire and hear the bullshite excuses on why you didn't get any of those big 3.
Good thing you won't have to do that
Long has his #1. It will not be a disappointing hire

gosh your stupid, some of those people who donate big time to the UA. Just to give you an idea it would take Long 100 years to make the the kind of money some of them have even with his pay raise. I think JL is playing us, he is a salesman and got his money. I doubt very seriously he has his number one guy locked up and just told the BOT that in order to get himself a raise.
I will bet you that most on here will be like WTF when the name is announced and I doubt it will be a super home run. More than likely dividing the fan base even further. I am not a fan of Jeff Long and think him to be more concerned about his own career than advancing the University of Arkansas. I hope I am wrong but I do not think I am and will just set back and watch the implosion.

You need mental help.

OK Willow,
Here's where I'm sitting on the coaching search as of 2:15pm Nov. 17. In contract negotiations things can and do change rapidly.
First, no one but a handful of people have any clue what is going on. Stonehog posted that the Ath. Dept. has been on lock down the last 2 weeks. Areas where media could go that were right next to the coaches and AD's offices are no longer accessible and there are curtains put up and security detail posted to the doors.
Something is moving, something that if it leaked would ruin it. This tells me it's someone that currently has a job, and that his agent was likely in town to possibly sign a tender on behalf of his client.
This day and age of technology a face to face interview is not required. Hell I interview people all the time through video chat, I have videoconference meetings almost weekly using anymeeting.com / gotomeeting.com. Long and the coaches could have both interviewed from the comfort of their own sofas.
One of the more important factors we should look at isn't overall happiness with the coaches as most of them are likely happy with their jobs. We're looking for the coach that still has something to prove, the guy that really wants to go out with a bang.
I think Tuberville, Patterson, Gundy, Davis, Fitzgerald all fit this criteria. I think Petersen might be finally interested in coaching somewhere where he'd have some tools at his disposal.
Jeff Long is a very perceptive man, and competitive. He's been willing to take risks, open the piggy bank, and hedge those risks to his advantage.
I'd love for it be Gundy, I think he could blow up at Arkansas, the Ath. Dept. supports coaches at Arkansas that is a huge attraction for someone in Gundy's position. I think Holder would tell Gundy to hit the bricks before giving a raise or extending him further. T Boone and Holder just might fire Gundy for flirting with Arkansas, they're that far up each other's arse.
End of the day, I don't think it'll be Gundy or Patterson. Fitzgerald keeps intriguing me because I think JL will hire a name out of left field, not one of these purported leaders uninformed media claim they have a source on.
I don't think it'll be Petersen, I don't think it'll be Tuberville. If I had a gun to my head, I'd say Butch Davis and hope they give him the funds to have an all-star type staff. I don't think Davis is the #1 pick though.

People were hot on him early, but him bombing out without RGIII has pretty much eliminated him.
Lost more than RGIII lost Wright Gannaway and others. Briles is not in consideration because of the situation in Waco (Baylor is going enforce buyout and he doesn't want to leave the gold mine he has).

I believe Briles to be the next coach of the Texas Longhorns.
Posted on 11/17/12 at 3:35 pm to CtotheVrzrbck
I think he stays at Baylor. I think that he believes that he can be the new generation Taeff. He is getting new stadium, Starr likes athletics, the baptist boys are getting money into program. Briles will probably retire at Baylor, JMO.

Rainwater is pumping Bill O brian PSU head coach and I believe it....

Adding Jim Mora Jr. to the Officially Removed from consideration list. The win over USC has him set for 6-8 years at UCLA.

then they closed with Gruden rumors for 6.1 million with Jerry Jones meeting 800 thousand of it, I tried to catch it one the 5th quarter but missed it. Talked with someone about it today and heard Patterson and Gundy are smoke screens for someone like Petersen from Boise. Who I heard was in play.
This stuff sucks and then we have Jeff Long looking like a possum eating grape seeds. Nothing gets out from this crew. Even people who donate a million bucks a year are out of the loop and my sources are not confident in any one name right now. That is scary.

Did you check with former land commissioner Charlie Daniels?

After Saturday's 45-22 win against Indiana, someone flat out asked the 43-year-old: Are you going to be Penn State's coach next year?
Surely that was an opportunity for O'Brien to pledge his commitment to Nittnay nation. Surely that was the time for him to say despite the national accolades he's receiving, despite the rumors that are floating around, he wants to be at Penn State for the long haul.
Instead? O'Brien was coy, vague and perhaps a bit defensive.
"There's no story there," the coach said, adding he thought the media planted the story last week by mentioning NFL openings. "I'm focused on one game at a time. I'm focused on this football team."

no although he probably knows as much as anyone, I know some of the board members where very PO'd over the JLS hire and will be pulling a lot of support if Long messes this up. He has assured several BOTs that he has his number one target, lock stocked and barrel. Who knows given his past hiring I am going to reserve comment. Hope for the best but be prepared for the worse.

Yes, had lunch today with someone who would know so that is the information I received, that Long does have his number 1 guy committed.
