Seasoning "Black Pots"

The ones I have were either given to me or bought already "seasoned".

I picked up a couple of old "black" skillets at an auction but they are rusty. What's the best method to get them back into cooking shape?

get you some lard and cook it, let it cool, add more, cook it, let it cool. Repeat process until pan looks ready to rock

Is there rust on them?

I put mine on the BGE at around 800 to burn off everything and start from scratch. I use a steel brush attachment on my drill and take of all rust. After all debris is off, coat with oil and bake at 350. Repeat that 3-4 times.

Yeah, same principle. I just used earl because I had it on hand.

The pain in the arse was getting all the rust off. NEVER again will I get drunk and let water sit in that pot over night.

Exactly what do you mean by "cook it"?

I ask cause a friend once told me he filled his up with grease and left until it caught fire and burned then scraped it. I tried that years ago and ended up throwing the pot.

These have rust. One is VERY old and even pitted.

I thought of OSPHO.


How did you get the rust off? SOS pad?

Jack, I went to that lil Farmer's Auction in Redell. I've been swinging by on Saturdays. Was supposed to umpire all weekend for a tourn in Mamou but it was cancelled.

Anyway, there were two lots with black skillets. I picked them up for $4.00 and $5.00. Could have gotten more since I had the high bid each time. The others were the smallest sizes. These are medium ones.

Sand down all the rust back to metal. Go outside and build a nice fire. Get a good bed of coals and get it hot. Load up with wood, coat pot with a thick layer of lard and put it on the fire. Use a wire hanger, fire poker, etc move it around. Leave it on there til the lard left gets dark dark, smoking but take it off before it catches fire. Add more lard and repeat. Flip over one time. When done just clean off the coals and ash with a wet cloth, put a layer of oil on and done. Takes a while but seasoned like a champ.

Fellas, yall might want to venture over to the help board and check out dranconian sanctions thread. The OB board is getting bashed on.

That's a good deal. Can't have enough black iron pots. We just took some brownies out of the oven in a cast skillet. Use them for everything.

Season just like the others said. I've done the full with oil and heat til on fire before. Works good but not any better than the other methods. Use it to deep fry stuff for five times or so. That will finish seasoning really nice.

I hated to pass them up at such a cheap price and figured maybe one day my kids would want them. I already had 3. One real real big one; a medium like the two I bought today and a smaller one.

After it burned, the burnt grease wasn't CAKED on? And did you let all the grease burn out?

I knew I wouldn't last by myself in there.

Back to the thread: My grandma use to save bacon grease and season all of her cast iron stuff with it. She would bake hers in the oven or have my granpa put it on a hook over the fire.
