Well to be technical, and I do mean technical, it was obstruction.

Because he was awarded second base on the walk, the entire thing becomes a pickoff play. well, here it is in the rule book.

SECTION 54. Type 2 Obstruction: A.R. 4: On a pickoff play at any base, the defensive player must clearly have possession of the ball before blocking the base with any part of the defensive player’s body. The umpire will call “That’s obstruction” and then signal and call “Time.” The ball is dead immediately, and the runner being played on is awarded one base beyond the last base he had attained before the obstruction.


So technically, he should have been on third base because he blocked the bag before he got the ball.

If this is true then anytime there is a walk -- even to first, you should try to obstruct player to et him off of bag for pick off.
