The Prometheus (Major Spoiler) Discussion Thread

I just got back from Prometheus and thought it was a good movie overall but it was not what I was hoping for or expecting. I was hoping for something more like Alien or Aliens but 30+ years better.
Now to the post movie discussion that all the reviews promised we would have: why did the Engineers want to destroy life on Earth?
The theory we came up with was Christianity. Did anyone else pick up on this? The ancient drawings show that people worshiped the Engineers. Dating the decapitated Engineer showed that he died 2,000 years prior to the year of the movie (which was 2089 through 2091 I think) and when Christianity was spreading. So people moving from "Engineer worship" to Christianity chapped the Engineer's caboose.
It would also explain the name of the ship. The movie said Prometheus was a Titan who was exiled from the Gods for trying to elevate humans to God status. Isn't that what the Engineers would have seen Christianity as? Plus all the anti religious references that David says to Shaw seems to back this up for me. We're thinking it was supposed to be a Noah and the flood type of event.
So my group was a bit divided on whether this was the cause.
Thoughts?

Nice theory but think you read way to much into the movie.

I'd like to know what the significance of the opening scene was and also why the android "poisoned" that one guy.

If you're referring to when the space jockey humanoid drinks that black goo and breaks apart into trillions of DNA strands in the waterfall, I'm fairly certain that was depicting how life started on earth. That's fairly significant I think.

You didn't follow this in the movie? David was initially programmed to do whatever it took to insure Weyland was able to meet/speak to the "engineers"...regardless of the potential dangers. I didn't feel like he was purposely harming the humans (though collateral damage was an acceptable price to pay.) At the end when he was helping Doctor Shaw I believe that he was experiencing free will.

That makes sense, but the doctors would probably have wanted to meet them too since he talked so much about finding out where they are from. The android did talk about being free when weyland dies.

I'm thinking not. I Googled it last night to see how far off I was and this exact thing was trending in the forums on Prometheus' website.

There is another detail in this movie that I have a question about. What do you all think David said to the engineer to cause it to go beserk? I'm guessing it was something along the lines of asking for immortality and the engineer didn't particularly like it.

Same here, but I still I enjoyed it. The last scene was great with the xenomorph hatching from the space jockey.
Here's a question...why did the egg-like canisters start leaking the deadly black goo? Did the humans do something when they were exploring the alien ruins to cause that to happen?
Also, where did the snake-like creatures come from? Did they form from the leaking black goo...? Or did they come from somewhere else in the ruins...? That part kinda confused me.
It seems to me like the canisters were biological weapons that the engineers/space jockeys would use on planets to destroy life (to perhaps recreate it). Apparently the planet was a sort of weapons facility and the engineers were overrun with their experimental weapons. It also seems to me like the black goo could spawn virtually anything - for example the snake-like creature or something in the form of a face-hugger.

My thoughts:
1) He told the engineer they released the biological weapon.
2)They were there to sudy him
3)A failed attempt to communicate.

That's a cool thought. I just took that reaction from the engineer to serve as our (and the characters') discovery that the engineers were NOT peaceful beings looking to help us. Rather, they were hostile and determined to destroy us. Chaos then ensued...

Yeah, I think that's right on. Maybe the Engineer expected to be worshipped like the ancients did and he was put off by someone just asking for something.
As for the black gooo, was the point of that just to kill or was it supposed to turn people in jacked up killers like that one guy and Earth would be destroyed by people killing each other?
And is it safe to assume that the alien seen in the Aleins movies was an accident and just came about because the face sucker got ahold of an Engineer?

There was a quick shot that showed little maggot things under someone's boot print when they walked through that room. Maybe little worm/maggots were living there and got jacked up and aggressive when they touched the black goo.

I'm not so sure of that, but it's possible. But remember that there appeared to be some sort of Alien/xenomorph artwork or something in the engineer's ruins. That seems to indicate that the engineers knew about the species/creature we see in Alien way before one emerges from the engineer at the end.
In fact, I seem to remember reading somewhere that in the comics, the engineers created the xenomorph species as a biological weapon to use on other planets, but they were overrun by the xenomorph species...
Perhaps I'm missing it, but I think that's one of the disappointments I had with this movie - getting a clear answer as to WHERE the xenomorph creatures came from or HOW they were first created.

Ah yes, that makes sense. Good deal.

The black goo was most definitely the weapon and IF the engineers did manage to get to earth my theory was that they would place those capsules all over the earth. Possibly in oceans to contaminate the earths water supply?

If any questions were looming as to of this was an Alien prequel this answered it. It wasn't exactly an Xenemorph , but it will eventually evolve into it.

I saw it last night as well. If anybody reading this wants $10 off of their 3D experience go to fandango app and enter code "KFC".
As for your explanation GeauxUtes, I think its pretty damn good. The religion explanation works for me
I like my sci fi movies to leave the conclusions and explanations to be made by the audience rather than have the director lead us on some 2 hour roller coaster with tons of loose ends that exponentially build on themselves (see LOST).
I was at a loss when the research scientist rebooted so to speak outside of the ship and started killing everyone. That was him huh? Or was that the guy that had his arm broken?? I couldn't tell for whatever reason.

Why Christianity?
Judaism, Hinduism, Buddhism, and Taoism were around for centuries before the emergence of Christianity. If the target of humans' worship was an issue, the Engineers would have acted much sooner.

The guy who had his arm broken was just plain killed by the snake type thing. The "rebooted" guy was the one who fell into the goo and his helmet cracked. I think the goo just needed some time to change him before he became some kind of killer zombie alien.

Wouldn't Christianity cause the biggest stir among the target American audience? I feel like that's what movies like to do.
