This little guy made it to California in 400# of crawfish... I say its a painted turtle, wife says other wise, and she's afraid its a snapper. She thinks this because of the way it went after a piece of raw catfish I threw in his aquarium ...

If he gets loose you will ruin the ecosystem of California.
BTW, I can't ID him. The pic is too small

Not a snapper because you are not dead yet.

So you're planning on keeping him?
You've almost have to keep a turtle that survived that kind of trip.

Eastern Mud Turtle, but not over 60% confidence on that.

Cal, if you do keep him, don't overfeed. You will just dirty up the water for naut. I think I once read where they can go a month without eating. It may depend on the temp so check it out.

It's a freaking Piss Turtle.
You let them bite your glove then twist their heads off.
Me and the farmer caught 72 in one running of the traps.

My dad carried a serrated blade knife for stinkpots, but I think he let mud turtles go. No idea why.

This, but only way to definitely tell if it's a mud or musk is by looking at its lower shell.
