Brandon McCarthy gets put on the disabled list for the 715th time in his career

Starting pitcher Brandon McCarthy became the latest addition Sunday to the A's expanding list of injuries.

The right-hander joined the 15-day disabled list with a strained right shoulder. Reliever Jim Miller was recalled from Triple-A Sacramento to take his roster spot.

McCarthy joins outfielders Coco Crisp and Yoenis Cespedes and third baseman Brandon Inge as front-line players to join the A's DL in the past couple of weeks. As if that weren't enough, Manny Ramirez — currently with Sacramento on a 10-game assignment before his suspension ends -- was held out of Sunday's game with a wrist injury of unknown seriousness.

No announcement was made, but it's likely right-hander Graham Godfrey will be brought up from Sacramento to start in place of McCarthy Tuesday against the Angels. Godfrey, who went 0-3 with a 5.06 ERA in three starts with the A's earlier this season, was pulled early from his Friday night start for the RiverCats for unannounced reasons.

Any shoulder issue with McCarthy, the A's opening day starter, raises a red flag because of the considerable time he's missed in recent seasons with shoulder injuries. But McCarthy said this injury doesn't involve his scapula (shoulder blade), which is the recurring problem area that has required lengthy stints on the DL in the past.
