Hoby Brenner News:
(event just passed) The second annual Fish for Life Texas Hold ’em poker tournament is set for 6 p.m. Saturday at Bella Collina Towne & Golf Club, 200 Avenida La Pata, San Clemente.
By donating $100 toward Fish for Life, a nonprofit organization that provides fishing trips for people with special needs, registered tournament players will receive a Dana Wharf fishing trip valued at $59, entry in a raffle for Nike clothing, a chance to bid in live and silent auctions and match wits against former pro football players Jim Everett (Rams), Hoby Brenner (Saints), Lance Scott (Giants), Kirk Dodge (Lions), Dave Wilson (Saints) and more. -------------------For the oldsters- can ya imagine spending time hanging with Brenner, Dave Wilson, & Jim Everette? There would be some interesting tales to stir up.

Eric

put the Ronnie Lott hit pic in cuz he is one player I have a difficult time imagining existing in today's pansy hitting NFL

Martin was taken in the 7th round of the 1985 NFL Draft by the New Orleans Saints. He was the 27th wide receiver taken that year.

Martin played in 10 NFL seasons from 1985–1994. In 1987, he helped lead the Saints to their first playoff appearance in franchise history, only to lose to the Minnesota Vikings 44-10 in the NFC Wildcard. The following year, Martin was a Pro Bowl selection, catching 85 receptions for 1,083 yards and 7 touchdowns. After playing 9 years with the Saints, he spent the last year of his career with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Martin holds several Saints receiving records. He ranks first in receptions with 532, second behind Joe Horn in touchdowns with 48, and first receiving yards with 7,854. He ranks second behind Joe Horn with most 100-yard receiving games with 18.

not bad for a #179 draft pick...

179th Overall - New Orleans

"Mean" Gene Atkins was the Saints' 179th pick out of Florida A&M in 1987, and started 87 games for the Saints and 31 more for the Dolphins through 1996. Atkins' great 1991 season helped lead to the Saints' first division title: three sacks, 5 interceptions and a league-high 198 return yards, four forced fumbles and two recoveries, plus 368 kick return yards.

But two seasons prior with this very same pick, the Saints picked LSU WR Eric Martin, who went on to own most team receiving records through 119 starts for the Saints. Martin scored 48 touchdowns for the Saints and one more in a quiet retirement with the Chiefs in 1994. Rivaled only by Joe Horn and Marques Colston as the greatest receivers in team history, Martin played in 143 straight games from 1985 to 1993. He still owns the career receiving yardage record, though Colston is within reach.

2010- Several players in this Super Bowl grew up in Louisiana, reared as rabid Saints fans. Reggie Wayne, an Indianapolis Colts receiver and Big Easy native, said he spent Saturday nights praying for breakout games from the former Saints wideout Eric Martin.

Wayne noted this week that deep down, on any other week, he remains a Saints fan. The bonds run that deep between the Saints and the city they call home. Wayne also said he had seen “a lot of brown paper bags” in his life.
