Was just listening to Tina Turner's version of Proud Mary and I know a lot of people don't realize that John Fogerty (lead singer of CCR) wrote it and CCR recorded it originally.

I know Johnny Cash, Elvis, the Stones, Clapton...all of the greats "stole" some songs too

A lot of songs have been covered and subsequently been made a lot more famous...let's see what we can come up with!

CCR-Proud Mary

Tina & Ike- Proud Mary

eta: another one I was surprised to learn about was Led Zeppelin's Travelling Riverside Blues
was almost an entire copy of the original Traveling Riverside Blues by Robert Johnson. Personally, I like the Led Zep version better...but still

Elvis Presley-Hound Dog was originally done by Big Mama Thornton

"Respect" was originally done by Otis Redding, not by Aretha

Long Tall Sally by Little Richard was probably pretty unknown until The Beatles performed it.

I feel like "Fly like an Eagle" is never mentioned or thought of as a Steve Miller song. It's always the Seal version that was done for spacejam. It really irritates me

*edit*

I also, personally, prefer Metallica's version of "Turn the Page" more than the Bob Seger version.

You can't discuss this subject without including "Hey Joe." You've heard Hendrix, Deep Purple, Slash, the Byrds, the Leaves and dozens of other bands cover the song—but have you ever even heard the original played by the guy who claimed authorship? Prolly no. It's a helluva song.
