8. CB Tyrann Mathieu, Jr., LSU

2011: 76 tackles, 7.5 TFL, 2 INT, 6 forced fumbles.

The breakdown: A big play waiting to happen. A classic risk/reward player at corner, and the most dangerous special teams player (returns and coverage) in a long time.

NFL scout says: “He’ll get exposed a bit with bigger receivers, but he’s one of those guys who is always making a play when you need it.”

12. DE Barkevious Mingo, Jr., LSU

2011: 40 tackles, 15 TFL, 8 sacks, 11 QB hurries

The breakdown: Spent much of last season rotating among a deep unit, but will get more exclusive time this fall. Speed pass rusher, strong against the run.

NFL scout says: “He has a chance to move into the top five (overall). In this league, it’s the quarterback first, and then guys that can affect the quarterback.”

23. DE Sam Montgomery, Jr., LSU

2011: 49 tackles, 13.5 TFL, 9 sacks.

The breakdown: A terror on the field, a stabilizing force in the locker room. Likes playing in the big game, in the big moment.

NFL scout says: “With his edge (rush) ability, he can play end in a 4-3, or outside linebacker in a 3-4. He’s so long, too. His wingspan makes him very difficult to engage and block.”

I think Lee at #2 is pretty silly. It doesn't really make sense that a QB can be #1 and his WRs can be #2 and #9. One complements the other, so either the WRs are making the QB better or vice versa. If they were really 3 of the top 10 players, they would pretty much be scoring touchdowns on every single play. Or at least every drive, and they clearly won't do that.

You would think the only remaining Heisman runner up would be higher, but gotta make room for USC's receivers... give me a break

I Love it.
Only thing, imo Geno Smith should be ranked higher. That kid has a howitzer for an arm, and just scary good all around. Oh where the hell are our RB's on that list.

By my quick count, only 9 defensive players made this list and 3 are Tigers.

I'm happy for the recognition. Only USCw, UGA and we have multiple players, and we're tied at the top with the Trojans with 3 players, although them having the top 2 positions strains credibility to the maximum.

Half the list (12) are QBs (7) and WRs (5), while only 3 RBs and 1 OL are listed - counting Jones (UGA) as a lineman, there are 5 DL out of the 9 defensive players on the list. The other 4 include 2 CBs and 2 LBs. There are no safeties or TEs listed.
