Question for all the old arse people

When our city was awarded the Saints franchise back in the 60's, how was the "mascot" of the Saints accepted? I know we've grown to love it over the years but what was the initial vibe of the idea of Saints? Corny? Cool? Unique? Indifferent? Just glad to have a franchise probably but beyond that.
I'll hit submit and listen.

are you referring to Iron Jaw? I'm confused by your question.
eta: you're refering to the name Saints. I see.

correct, the hornets rebrand threads have me wondering how Saints was accepted back in the day.

There was a name contest and the name "Saints"
came in first place by a comfortable margin.
Those early uniforms were pretty cool. Very golden gold pants and helmets.
I don't know about Ironjaw, but everyone loved Gumbo.
I grew up in the 70's and read about the '67-'70 years and heard it from my Dad. My first game was the '71 game at Tulane Stadium when Archie beat the future SB Champs 24-14.

As late as the 1990s I heard hardcore Catholics call into the Buddy D show, insisting the Saints would never win a SB until their name was changed

According to Dave Dixon it was always going to be "Saints", even back in '63 when the Dallas Texans almost moved to NO

I remember voting for Steamers in the contest. I'm glad "Saints" won though!!

Don't know about you guys, but this guy is the only Saints mascot that has been worth a damn to me:
Sir Saintchintesticles can jump off of the Crecent City Connection. Moses don't need no bridge, he will just part that biotch.

The franchise was officially born on 'All Saints Day' so calling the team the 'Saints' was only natural.
It is true though that many Catholics thought it was sacrilegious.

No, you are not the first to ask that question.

Not the first or last time a vote was decided long before the actual voting in LA.

The Archbishop blessed the name...the rest of them can go, well, you know.
