I'm not the biggest fan of hipsters, as I encounter a lot of them as I go to shows of bands I like, but I also dislike the reflexive anti-hipster people, who just hate anyone who likes something different and invents other people's motives for what they like. Both stereotypes are wrong.
But sometimes the stereotype is right. I go to SXSW pretty much every year, and my sister-in-law's friends would go to a show, listen to two songs, literally check the band's name off a list, and then go to another show. That's not appreciating music, that's just collecting. They just wanted to say, "I saw X many bands and I saw Y before they were cool" but the terrible thing is that they really didn't see anything.
They walked into a show I was at - they talked over Lissie's last song, which was a beuatiful beautiful song, and then ignored the first two songs of the Low Anthem's set before walking out. Both sets were amazing and I'm not sure they really heard a note. THAT is the kind of hipster I loathe.
