People keep saying this like it makes sense. You can say this about almost any hire.

Bc JJ was too young and a football guy

yall act like there is some hidden agenda with this question...I havent paid attention to LSU basketball in years...so if he was available then, I was simply asking if there was a reason he didnt get the gig last go around.

You are proceeding under the mistaken assumption that most people consider it a home run now.

The real answer is that Alleva was new on the job and had no idea who Johnny Jones even was. He interviewed him, but no serious consideration was given. However, he liked Johnny on a personal level and kept in touch and followed his career since that point.
The next time around, he was more comfortable and familiar with him.

This. Who outside the crew of Brown, Temple, et al consider this a homerun hire?

I think it was more a timing issue, replacing Brady who bitched about the mess he inherited his entire tenure, with someone many blame for helping create said mess would have been tough to sell

Trent had a better name and LSU wanted "a name" to appease the fan base.
I like the JJ hire now.
for a lot of reasons.....not any one "fail safe" one.

What have you been listening too? Nobody is saying this.

Trent Johnson's resume is pretty good prior to LSU. At the time, it seemed like a good hire. He was just a bad fit for LSU.
All that being said. Coach Jones/CJJ/JJ is our coach now. Give him a shot and support the team!

Did someone actually say he's a homerun hire? If so, they are clearly retarded. This is a settle hire because Alleva couldn't get any proven coaches. Maybe Johnny Jones will do well, but he hasn't done anything particularly notable in his career thus far.

I agree with both of the above.
JJones was with Dale B a pretty good Xs and Os man and he returns with 10+ years of experience...
his love for LSU should also help recruit.
His UNT team beat the hell out of us a few years back... and trust me UNT is not an easy place in which to recruit.
He gave all his all as a player, have to think he will do the same as a coach.
...for what the results will be, we have to wait a little time.

Because Bertman was on his way out as AD
Alleva had to make a hire without really knowing the LSU landscape
I can't really fault Alleva because I don't think Trent was a bad hire at the time

Trent was probably near number 1 on his radar if Coach K left. Was at a big time academic school, winning, and had contacts with the athletic academic kids because of it (its almost like a sequestered instate type of talent pool.) He might not have been a huge personality type guy but Duke being an established powerhouse obviously didnt need that. He was a good duke hire. Not a good LSU hire and I agree you cant really fault alleva for it.
