Me too. I graduated from high school in '87. We always listened to classic rock and metal in high school. Beatles, Who. Zeppelin, Doors, Ozzy, Ac/Dc, etc.
After I graduated, I started branching out a little. The Cult was my "gateway" band. They were still kind of metal (talking about Electric) but they also had their alternative side. From there, I started listening to stuff like you described as well as The Replacements, REM, U2 and all the other great artists mentioned in the OP.
