The Kings are remaining in Sacramento thanks to mayor Kevin Johnson(how good would he be in todays league?) and as usual hope springs eternal for one of the leagues best and loyal fanbases. The Kings have an abundance of young talent, including the talented but immature DeMarcus Cousins, former ROY Tyrke Evans, second round stud Issiah Thomas and local favorite Marcus Thornton. Keith Smart seems to be an upcoming coach and the Kings have a very expiercend GM in Geoff Pitre.

Going forward the Kings have a potential lottery pick with the fifth worst record in the league. The Kings, however, have a rather tough decision to make. Do they build around Cousins-a potential All-NBA franchise center but with serious issues or not? Tyreke Evans still has the team support, but now as an off-the-ball player. If he continues to do improve in moving without the ball and on ball defense, he will be a dynamic player in the league. Thornton is a scorer with a scorers mentality, he's signed to a reasonable deal at 7 million a year(also teams highest paid player), so he is tradeable asset.

This summer the Kings should be on the search for quality younger veterans. Dangling a package of a Thornton and lotto pick could bring some leadership. Reducing the number of players who need the ball in their hands is probably a good idea as well. Glue guys, with playoff experience, who can help Cousins development is the key to what looks to be a good foundation.

They do have an abundance of young talent, but it doesn't seem like they "fit" together. Especially Evans and Thornton. I could see one getting shipped out this summer, with, IMO, Evans more likely to stay. Jimmer has played well off the bench and his game is similar to Thornton's. If Evans can solidify himself as a true SF and their games mesh, then I could seem them staying together. Jimmer could develop into a helluva 6th man.

Cousins has the potential to be a superstar and a top 3 Center with Bynum and Howard. I think their future rests on his ability and desire to improve.

I do like Smart and think they'll be moving up the standings next year.

I stayed away from Jimmer in my initial post to gauge the interest of responses. I'm not sure if we are watching the same player. Jimmer has been atrocious for the Kings, even the Kings acknowledge how rough of a transition it has been for him. Not having summer league, preseason and a full training camp has certainly hinder his growth, but Jimmer is another guy who needs the ball and quite frankly I don't see him being successful in a "microwave" role as Thornton would be. Jimmer is a two guard in the league and will always struggle with creating his own shot and doesn't do anything else particularly well. The Kings might be better off sending him to the D-League, but we shall see.

I just went look at his stats and they are pretty poor. I watched him two games early in the season when he started and he looked good, but the stats are showing he's been pretty terrible.

I still think he has the ability to be a high energy bench guy. Maybe not a true 6th man, but a "sparkplug of the bench."

I think they drafted him knowing it'd take him a year or so to get up to speed with the NBA game.

I agree with to a certain extent. On the surface Tyreke is the embodiement of the young player. Needs to go one-on-one, lacks focus, below average shooter, doesn't move the ball enough (which if you watch any Kings game, the team has a problem moving the basketball), etc. Evans would benefit most playing with a dominant guard who set him up to score. more recently he is staying away from the outside shot, going to the hole instead. Coach Smart is consistently instructing him when he is subbed out, so hopefully it sticks. Cousins is the untouchable here. Personally, I would sell high with Thomas as well.

I still have no idea why they traded down for Jimmer and Salmons w/ Evans and Thornton on board. If they really liked Jimmer, just pick him.

To answer your question, they have to build around Cousins. He has been incredible the last few weeks. He's a head case, but he is already one of the best rebounders in the league.

Also the Maloofs have been backpedaling on their agreement with the city. Interesting to see what happens at the BoG .

They really have an awful collection of talent. None of it fits together and the coach has no idea what to do with what he has. First, Evans is totally lost. Someone has to put him in a position and let him flourish. He's not a PG. He turns it over too much. He has to learn how to shoot. Until he does, he's a waste and will never become anything. Don't even get me started on his defense.

Cousins has scary potential. I said it before the draft last year. He has the ability to be the best player in the league. Given that, I still don't know if I'd keep him. He's just a major headache and I don't know if he'll ever get it. He reminds me of Rasheed Wallace so much. If Wallace had ever really applied himself, he would have been a legend. Just never kicked in.

The team has so many holes though. First, they need a steady veteren PG. Not someone flashy, just a solid defender that can get the team set. Then they need to pick a SG out of the half dozen they have and commit to him. I'd think this would be Evans. There are no starter quality SF's or PF's on the team, just a bunch of back-ups. This is where Thornton and Jimmer would be trade bait to fill a spot, while they could use the lottery pick for the other spot. Cousins is the Center and Thompson is a decent back-up. Even then, the team wouldn't be that great. Very bleak outlook.

It's amazing Petrie still has a job. Ever since the CWebb Kings fell apart, they have been abysmal.

Best thing that could happen to that team is the Maloofs sell and new owners clean house

Petrie is well respected in the league and although their record doesn't reflect it, he's done a decent job drafting. You have to remember Kevin Martin and Spencer Hawes sort of extended that era a little bit but ultimately fell out. The Maloofs are never going to sell. They are second generations owners.

Anyone in this thread an actual Kings fan? Not trying to flame, just really surprised to see a discussion about the Kings here on TD. I live in the Sacramento area and it's been a long time since I had any real interest in them.

They need to trade Cousins to the hornets for the Minnesota pick.

Kings are one of those teams that has the potential to be really good in the next 3-5 years. I'm not sure Cousins will ever mature enough to be worth his stock however.
