I'm not sure why everybody is laughing at this. Dude was a very solid NBA player for quite a while. And he is very charismatic, which is a quality almost everybody has suggested should be a top priority in the new coach. And his being on a t.v. show that lots of recruits likely saw as kids couldn't hurt too much either with recruiting. Has he sucked as a HC? Granted, I don't know much about his coaching resume.

Took new Mexico state team that was 6-24 in sun belt to 27-8 in WAC to seasons later including near upset of Texas in first round of NCAA....landed top 15 recruit to las cruces, nm over Pitt, Memphis, and Kansas...head coach of Sacramento kings after two years at nmsu....guy is a superstar at college level

so why the laughter?

According to Wikipedia he coached two years in college at new Mexico state and finished second one year, and lost a first round NCAA tourney game. Thats his college history.
Nba, he has a career record of 44-62 and hasn't coached as a head coach since 2009. He was an assistant with the t-wolves from 2009 to 2011.
Yep, rock solid hire.

He's down my list but I'd take him over Johnny Jones.

6-24 year before he took over..16-14 first season moving into WAC and 27-8 following year...good enough to jump to NBA but not good enough to interview at lsu??

Who the frick do you think we are to turn our nose up at fricking Reggie Theus? Any hire we are able to make is going to be a gamble, much like Trent was. If you want a "rock solid hire," go follow fricking North Carolina. I got news for you guy, there are very few "rock solid hires" and not a goddamn one is coming to Baton Rouge.

I agree with this. Extremely impressive what he did at NM in just two years. That's what got him the Kings job, and he barely got a chance there as the franchise was in total decline. Most LSU fans would like to see someone with a more extensive resume, though.
I do wonder what he's been doing since 2009 and if he's even sniffed another job.

Mark Curry > Reggie Theus

Why was a program like Bama able to hire a guy like Anthony Grant? Is our basketball program inferior to theirs too?

I would rather Mr.Cooper.
Not saying you, but I think a lot of the 20-somethings on here only associate Reggie with that terrible arse t.v. show. Dude played 13 fricking years in the NBA.

What guy "like Anthony Grant" is currently available? Shaka Smart and Brad Edwards have already turned town programs infinitely better than ours. Who are these other guys you speak of?

he was last on Hangtime in 1998. So unless 2 year olds watched it, not really.

Assistant for the Timberwolves until sometime in 2011 per Wikipedia. Interviewed for Depaul job but doesn't say why he didn't get it.

Assistant to Kurt rambis two seasons until fired in Minnesota...runner up for USC and Depaul jobs when they were open...finalist at Illinois this spring....would win and win big at lsu...guy is a recruiter on par w best in game

So it's because nobody is available and not because LSU has an undesirable program that nobody wants to go to?
