Does anyone know of a Volvo Marine mechanic in the BR

or surrounding area??
I have a Volvo engine in my boat and im having a issue with the water pick up in the out drive. Im thinking the impellers need changing, but would like someone with more experience than me to look at it. thanks

not really a volvo engine,just says it on the motor.

Impellers are relatively easy to change unless you are female.

With a Volvo outdrive. Order the parts online, very easy to replace. I know there is an impeller near the motor, can't remember if there is one in the foot also...

I have done it on the water before, but it has been a couple of years. Let me go take a look at mine and take a couple of photos. It is easy...

Brought my boat to him for warranty work and he parked the boats so close you couldnt walk between them, i get home and there is a fresh 27' scratch from front to back. I know for a fact it wasnt there when I brought to him. I'm sure it's still a pully driven water pump that is located up near your alternator or power steering pump. It's called a seawater pump and the engine water pump just circulates the water that the seawater pump pulls from the foot.
Those are the only 2 water pumps you have.
Mercruisers have the pump in the foot, but Volvos don't.
Replacing the impeller is quite easy. Iboats forum used to have manuals for download.

the reason I think this is the problem is this: once I launch the boat and idle, it seems the boat isnt picking up fresh water to cool the motor because th etemp will shoot up and warn me the motor is getting hot. but once sit in Neutral, or reverse and rev up the motor it will finally pick up. but it taks some work.. but when I go to flush the motor with the hose attatchment that goes directly into the motor it works fine. So i dont really know what problem I have.

Also check the foot at the water pickup points, dirt dobbers have a dirty habbit of cloggin those things up.

You will have to cut the hose fasteners off, just buy some new ones that adjust to replace...
I would probably order and change the thermostat also...

It might be the thermostat sticking, fresh water from the hose is bypassing that. Also, if memory serves, the hoses running to the impeller can get debris that slows down the flow to the line.

But when i flush it like that it opens and the temp is fine and i can run it for a while to flush it out.. I only have this problem when I launch the boat dry, and by dry is when its set up for a week or two between uses.

Might be the impeller wearing out and not having a good suction for water pickup. You are right the thermostat would not come into play until it reached the temp needed to open. That would not be happening at the launch when you drop the boat in the water...
ETA, an impeller kit is only going to cost you ~$50 I would replace that and see how it goies. You are looking at a couple of hundred for a trip to a shop, plus drive time there and back...

There are two pumps on that motor.The lower one slides over the main shaft that goes over the foot.It is not wise to change just the impeller.Not a hard job though.
