there were. the book even made mention of a brief period when andy had a roomate who liked andy but complained of his cell being cold. Besides, he could tack it up on four corners every night that he didnt try to escape....

I thought all the Cells on that block were single bunk cell's.. Or whatever the prison term for 1 person in a cell is

It always bothered me that 500 yards is no where close to just short of half a mile.

no. remember the warden, when he was threatening andy, was going to take him out of his single cell and cast him down with the sodomites.
yes bt, the book was very good, except in the book, warden norton was one of many crooked wardens and he didnt die or go to jail in the end, just got robbed.

Did you just completely miss the scene that it showed him hiding under the poster at night?

There are so many holes and what-ifs and possible interpretations of different scenes in Shawshank that you just have to take it for face value.
Still my favorite flic of all time.
e.g.
-How did Andy know in advance what he was going to bury under the tree and that there was a black igneous rock there?
-Why didn't the new warden review any mail coming to Red as a possible clue of Andy's whereabouts?
They would have seen the postcard sent to Red.
-Why didn't any of the Portland banks that Andy visited to close accounts have an idea at least of Andy's physical description, since he was VP of a Portland bank when he was arrested?
-Wouldn't there have been an investigation that followed that would have exonerated Andy? Since the newspapers believed him when he wrote of Fatass and Tommy's murders, wouldn't they have believed about Elmo Blatch?
-How did the adjacent cells not hear Andy at night chipping away at his wall with the rock hammer?
-Wouldn't Andy have asphyxiated crawling through the sewer pipe?
-Why would he leave his clothes and the rock hammer in the ditch as evidence? I would
have kept the rock hammer as a treasured keepsake.
-Did Maine banks not require a picture ID to withdraw funds?
Still my favorite flic of all time.

I always assumed that Andy planned to plant the rock there himself and he chose black igneous since he knew there wouldn't be any others like it there.

The fact that Morgan Freeman said it, makes it true.
Math has been wrong since they made that movie.

He and his wife had a picnic and made love there, so it was a spot with great emotional meaning there (he mentions this in a movie in a speech to red)

They would have seen the postcard sent to Red.
They did, but the postmark was fort hancock texas. It would have only told them that he was south of the border somewhere.

It had been twenty years since he was arrested. People change in twenty years. And there was no reason for them to suspect he was running a 300,00 dollar scheme from inside prison as a man named randall stevenson.

the only evidence that elmo blatch did anything was dead. plus, the bewspapers only believed him b/c he sent the financial records of the operation (remember when he switched them with the bible)
quote:

This was explained in the book. very poor, soft concrete from the dpression.
quote:
-Wouldn't Andy have asphyxiated crawling through the sewer pipe?
possibly, but people used to have to physically clean cesspools, so i doubt it. the book put forth a far more macabre possibility. What if he got to the end of the pipe and there was a grate on it?

Maybe, but perhaps if he were to be stopped on the road walking away from the prison, he would not want that item on him.

Driver's licenses used to did not have photographs. the decriptions on his id papers were of andy, since he was randal stevens.

I've never read the book, but in the movie it showed him smashing through a fairly thick pipe with a rock. The pipe seems to look to be at least a couple of inches thick. I don't think you could do that and no way was the initial opening in the pipe large enough for a person to fit through.

My turn:
Well if he knew what clue(s) he was gonna leave for Red to find him, he'd obviously know what he was gonna bury there. The first part of your question doesn't make sense. Secondly, he knew the spot, so the rock could've been there or he could've easily placed it there after he got out.
It wasn't signed by anyone...it was a random post card. So even if they noticed it, it wouldn't really mean much.
After ~18 years? Nobody would've recognized him most likely, and he had already gotten the money by the time the news was breaking.
Wouldn't matter and a trial was unnecessary...he was already abroad and getting busy living (that's goddamned right).
He wasn't chipping at it like at hard rocks with a pin and hammer. He was basically carving the soft rock.
Why keep it? They knew it was him that escaped...it's not like the "evidence" is gonna connect him to anything (he already was). Might as well leave everything from that life behind and move onto his new life.
Apparently not...they showed him giving multiple forms of ID to the banks and whatnot.
