Heres a few I think fit into the pre-WWII era:
Roy Acuff - Tennessee Waltz
Roy Acuff - Wabash Cannonball (covered by almost all country singer of that time)
Ernest Tubb - Walking the Floor Over You
Tex Ritter - New Moon

"Tennessee Waltz" is a postwar song
But it's nice getting a reply so I won't say anything

Most of the stuff I listen to is 50s-80s, but I do enjoy the earlier stuff.

I'll post some Bob Wills links a little later. Power outage here and too hard to link from the phone.

Helluvan outfit backing up Hoagy: Bix Beiderbecke, Jimmy Dorsey, Joe Venuti...
And a wee bit o' trivia about HC.
"Bond reminds me rather of Hoagy Carmichael, but there is something cold and ruthless." -- Ian Fleming, Casino Royale
"Rather like Hoagy Carmichael in a way. That black hair falling down over the right eyebrow. Much the same bones. But there was something a bit cruel in the mouth, and the eyes were cold." -- Ian Fleming, Moonraker

This is a remake of a Jimmie Rodgers track:
Jimmie Rodgers -- "Never No Mo' Blues" (1928)
I first heard the song on an album by the great '80s cowpunk (admins: please unanchor my cowpunk thread) band The Blasters. YouTube has "Never No More Blues by The Blasters here, but it's not the one I first heard. The earlier version was slower, while this sounds like a speeded-up Cajun two-step. I still like it though.

Clarence Ashley - "The House of the Rising Sun" (1934)
First recorded version -- Ashley later said he was taught the song as a child by his grandfather
ETA: For convenience's sake, The Animals version

"The Story Of American Folk Music" -- (BBC documentary)
If you can put up with the political bias this has some very interesting clips, including Leadbelly and even archivist John Lomax.
