Fresh bread. I like toasted just fine, but it is hard to beat some good, sticks to the roof of your mouth, fresh white bread.

Just like the crust of a pizza, the bread makes the dish. All else is ancillary.

Cant have a perfect sandwich (imo) until you can get some fresh tomatos from you or a friends backyard garden. It really makes a huge difference. Lemon cukes can be used as a substitute in some sandwiches.
