All good advice here. The drive to Folly is only long on a summer weekend if you try to head out after 11am. At Folly hit up Taco Boy (Downtown location as well) and/or Surf Bar. Both great spots.
Upper King is a happening spot these days. Just a few weeks ago Bill Murray was hanging around playing Ping-Pong at HoM. The McIntosh is a new "it" spot for food. Steaks at Halls are good. Midtown for the college scene. Another place to try is The Grocery for dinner.
Butcher and Bee does lunch and late night food. The sandwiches are out of this world but pricey. It's a little further up King. Probably would drive or pedicab.
Tatooed Moose was another Diners, DriveIns, and Dives spot. Great brunch dive spot. The Royal American is a new dive just down the street on North Morrison.
Rue De Jean and Coast would be good spots to take your old lady. Can eat well and not break the bank.
Eat at FIG. Drink bourbon at the Husk Bar. If you go there eat the burger.
Cypress is great for fine dining.

Great advice so far and I don't have much more to add other than to say it is one of my favorite American cities and would be where I'd go if I moved from New Orleans.
