Me too, though my theories have always been he struggled to defend without fouling while he was officiated brutally. He would get beat up and got no protection when he was playing defense. A lot like what happened during his NBA career. Geiger breaks his hand, he is called for traveling. It is tough being a mutant, they penalize you.

God's honest truth. Thing is, with his size it doesn't matter how hard they hit you because you're barely moving. So to the ref it doesn't look like much. To the contrary, Iverson got to the line so much in part because he was so little, and going fearlessly against guys so big, he'd end up sprawled out on the floor half the time. The kind of contact that would've sent Iverson to the second row, Shaq would've barely noticed.
