I would geaux in a slightly different direction. If you win your conference but you suck, you don't get in. That applies to not only the Sun Belt, but also teams like UConn in 2010.

I'd also let a wild card in. That takes care of the indys, gets ND (and therefore NBC) on board, and it expands the pool of meaningful games. If your conference is essentially wrapped up, you're playing for seeding or a wild card slot.

I would either take the top 7 conference champs plus one wild card, or all ranked conference champs and fill the field out with wild cards.

If you have a 12-team playoff, 5-8 get first round home games and 1-4 get byes plus second round home games. If you have an 8-team playoff, 1-4 get first round home games.
