Great. John Singleton's ONLY good movie. It's really good, brah, check it out. Definitely a classic. Of course Laurence Fishburne is in it playing Laurence Fishburne, but that's ok and easy to look over.

Crazy fact. John Singleton was only 23 years old when he wrote and directed the movie. He is the youngest director to ever be nominated for an Oscar. Another crazy stat is that the Hughes brothers were only 21 when they made Menace II Society. Singleton and the Hughes brothers haven't made a movie as good as those two films since. A lot of the great black directors from the early '90s peaked at an incredibly young age.

I know this sounds shitty, but its probably because they took a long time to write their first movie and it was about their lives. They just aren't that creative, and having to go back to the well and do another movie about the same stuff comes off terribly.

They did movies about a way of life that hadn't been filmed much before then and it was new and fresh and well done. Now, its the same shite and their creative limitations can't give it any new insight for the audience.

ETA: Think about musicians. The sophomore slump probably has more to do with a shortened creative window. Your first album you might have worked on since you were 13. The second? You get 6 months.

book of Eli should have been a good movie. Its one of those that had a interesting concept. I really WANTED to like it.

BTW, Boyz in the hood was heavy handed and lacked any kind of subtlety. Most of those hood movies were very overrated.

What I said earlier. They generally lacked any sort of subtlety. Their plots were derivative of grindhouse movies from the decades before where the primary motivation was to shock. the hood movies were just acted a little better.

Laurence fishburn was a walking talking political statement on how whitey screws people over. He couldnt have been more two dimensional if they used a cardboard cutout. Ice cube was a gangster nrapper dropped in the plot for a typical over the top tough guy.

You had the talented kid who just couldnt quite make it out of the hood b/c he couldnt get good enough on the ACT! Oh if only "they" hadn't sacrificed his education for football! (shite this is a goddmaned football board- who here really believs a guy good enough to go to ?USC dont find a way to get in. Damn.)

And of course the token cops who brutalize poor trey for nothing at all (Oh, but one's a self hating black- how artistic)

The only good part of the movie was trey's conversation with his friend about sex.

Want a good movie about growing up in the hood? Watch a production of a raisin in the sun. Extremely well written.

Very good movie. I was 17 and working at a movie theatre when it came out.

You should watch it if you haven't seen it. Pretty powerful.

when he finished off that guy towards the end, he seemed like he had a moment of doubt, like he just committed a moral sin or something. Real tough guy there

that was a half arse recruiting job if I ever saw one. I mean Ricky had to play the tape of his highlight reel to refresh/educate the recruiter why he was there in the first place. If he was the next Marcus Allen or Reggie Bush it would have been different right?

It didnt forgive his terrible acting all the way up to that point, and the point underscored the lack of subtely even more- someone had to die before this character questioned anything about himself- oh buit he had mommy issues (poorly done as well). Terrible.

And since when is USc the only fricking school recruiting anyone? If USc was in there, he had a line of recruiters.

Great movie. Had some great quotes from it.

Chris: Fool, I wasn't even talking to you. This is a A-B conversation, you know... you can "C" your way out of it.
Doughboy: Yeah, you can "C" your way out my ride, and we'll "C" your cripple arse walking all the way home

Domino, motherfricker!
