Full Metal Jacket - Do you like the first or second half better?

I MUCH prefer the half of the movie up until when Leonard blew his brains out. The first half I would give a 10/10, the rest of the movie is like a 6/10 IMHO

It's really two different films. One is the story of private Pyle, the other of Joker.
And I think R.Lee Ermy makes the first half superior, but the second half is good as well

Private Pyle and R. Lee Ermey are much more compelling than Joker.

First half. The abuse was just relentless, and I'd never heard anything quite like it before. I fear I would have been like Pyle, laughing my arse off until the DI made me choke myself.

It's a good film, but Kubrick was a little late to the party. One of his weakest films.

That soap-in-the-towel sequence was one of the most unpleasant scenes I've ever seen in a movie.

Well this thread is pretty one-sided.
The only other person i've ever discussed this movie with said he rathers the second part. I assumed it would be a split, but this aint even worth a thread.

I like the first better, but the second half always gets disrespected undeservedly IMO. It's still a very solid "half," but it has to follow one of the greatest intros/first halfs ever.

The first half is definitely the best. The only part that really shines for me in the second half is the helicopter scene.

Agreed. Animal Mother alone makes the second half worth watching. All he needs is people to keep lobbing hand grenades at him for the rest of his life.
