This may seem obvious to a lot of you guys on the recruiting board, but I've seen a lot of posts recently stressing over our lower rivals ranking, lack of big name oos commits, and the fact that our program generally is completely imploding in every possible way.

A quick glance at our depth chart should help the more rational tiger fans understand why this year's class isn't for star gazers. In skimming over it, you'll notice that we're returning a lot of guys who either started, or have gotten solid playing time at their positions.

The point to this is that most blue chip recruits are extremely wary of established depth at their position. Most of these guys, right or wrong, feel like they should and will start the second they set foot on campus. Not to say all good prospects are afraid of competition, just that most want to be second string at the worst, with the guy in front of them moving on sooner than later.

The problem is, we're two deep at most every position with guys who HAVE to play for two more years. Hell, even Saban can tell kids that most of the secondary is out the door, and recruits are signing to be second string out of the gate. This makes LSU a tough sell to the elite prospects of the country right now.

That being said, for the same reasons, we should have a very good season in store. That, inevitably, means that guys will head to the draft. When that happens, we'll once again be a top program that can offer guys early playing time, and the PP7's and SonicSam's of the country will take notice.

Solid post, but this is no place for reasonableness or rationality.

Then how can Bama have a top 5 class every year - wouldn't the same logic apply, and they would have a down class every now and then?

I said the exact same thing in the "2012 class" thread a few days ago....COMPLETELY AGREE. Hard to explain the Bama classes though...damnit.

So Mario Edwards and Tracy Howard can't jump whatever we have?

Really liked the post until I got here

Shouldn't bama be having problems recruiting? I mean, I think you make valid points throughout-is bama an exception?

I agree, Bama does seem to be the exception. Yet, this year a lot of starters are heading out. It wouldn't surprise me in the least if Saban told every recruit that they would start as a true freshman. Also, the myth that Saban/Bama is the inside track to the NFL is working wonders right now, even though 1/3rd of each class will transfer or be dismissed. Ponamsky put it best the other day, saying "every guy who signs with him thinks they're three years away from an NFL contract." I'm sure he's all too eager to nod along with them.

you can explain the bama situation in a couple ways -- 1) they do have many players leave early for draft (whether warranted or not), 2) Saban runs quite a few off every year to make sure to have room for the incoming.

Also, LSU could finish strong with this class.

I don't see that. First up is earned.. I think that was Kiel's problem - he didn't have the confidence in his own ability to earn it (and was probably right).. I think both MEJ and TH have the ability and chops to step up.

Doubt it. Distance > competition.

Maybe, maybe not, but it damn sure would be easier at UF for Howard. Haven't paid much attention to FSU's depth chart, but MEJ has the legacy thing going on.

For Gunner, it was distance, but this paints a pretty clear picture that it wasn't mommy as much as it was friends and such. I've heard the depth chart was a concern for his dad, but Gunner was pretty confident he was going to be a starter.

Totally agree that it would be easier to get play time.. These guys are elites - easy is not their ticket. NC prospects - that's the ticket. UF - don't think you can get there from here. I think TH will be tougher than MEJ because he's getting his ears boxed by UF, and MEJ is from Texas with family in Gautier, MS

You justify our recruiting class saying we're not getting studs because of depth. Then why does Bama get elite blue chips every year? And spare me the bullshite they have overrated classes. The NFL is a good enough gauge to prove Bama is rated high in recruiting rankings for a reason. Not to mention 2 NCs in 3 years...
